A successful fundraiser was organized by Mill Street Books who invited Charlotte Gray to make a presentation about her new book The Promise of Canada. As Charlotte preserves our Canadian history in her books, the $450 which was raised will assist the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in preserving local artifacts.

Mill Street Books is honoured to welcome Charlotte Gray to Almonte on December 4th at 1:00pm. She is one of Canada’s best-known writers, and author of ten acclaimed books of literary non-fiction.
In her most recent book The Promise of Canada: 150 Years — People and Ideas That Have Shaped Our Country, the author has woven together compelling portraits of nine influential Canadians and set them within the larger context of our shared history. Readers will get to know characters ranging from George-Étienne Cartier, Emily Carr and Tommy Douglas to Elijah Harper, Naheed Nenshi and Shad They will learn about how these people’s ideas developed from their own experiences, and how those ideas contributed to our sense of Canada. The book is lavishly illustrated so readers can also enjoy a visual narrative of Canada’s development.

An enthusiastic crowd of wizards, witches and muggle friends mingled at Mill Street Books at midnight to await the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. They strolled Down Diagon Alley for Quidditch, sweets and trivia. Refreshments included Butterbeer cake, Golden Snitches, Buzzing Chocolate Bees and Polyjuice potion. Hurrah to all who participated with creative costumes. Thanks to Debbie for the fun store window design, Colleen for window props, Angela and Erica for snacks, Sian for serving. Hats off to Janet and Mary Claire who set up Diagon Alley.
